Expectations

You should expect to begin officiating youth leagues, freshman and JV games the first season. Depending on individual performance, most newer officials will work their first varsity game some time in the 2nd or 3rd season.

First and second year officials receive training as a group. This training is classroom mostly, with on-the-field training coming in varsity scrimmages and during all games you work at all levels. You should receive feedback on your performance from the officials you work with. You should solicit this feedback if it is not offered. The board is working on developing a mentor program in which all new officials will be paired with a mentor.

Continual, year-round study of rules and mechanics is required for all officials. There are many resources available to officials including websites, clinics, mentors, study groups and association meetings. This website provides many valuable links and information for members. Taking advantage of such opportunities will aid in your progress as an official.
